The word “crystal” originates from the Ancient Greek word “krystallos,” which refers to ‘ice,’ ‘icy cold,’ or ‘frost.’ A translucent crystal resembles ice and possesses the quality of refraction. But what does this have to do with our fascination with crystals? I’ll explore that in this post.
My father is a man of science. He is a botanist and a biologist. Even though he became religious as he gotten older, he refused to look at things with any lens other than the perspective of science. Recently, my mom found out a secret stash of my father – a huge collection of crystals and rocks that he collected during his travels. He never grew up in a society where crystals are commonly sold and never subscribed to this holistic new age spirituality where crystal is seen as a tool of healing. When I asked him, why he has been collecting crystals, he said that he finds them fascinating and always feels drawn to them. I have found that many neurodivergent folks say the same thing – we’re just drawn to them. But why?
Through astrology, I realized that every planetary energy represents multiple things. If you’re an astrology enthusiast, these ‘keywords’ are likely familiar to you. For example, the energy of the Moon relates to the mother, emotions, food, and home. The Sun represents authority figures, vitality, assertiveness, and more. I started pondering the relationships among these clusters of keywords and realized that our physical existence acts like a crystal, refracting energy when we manifest a particular planetary influence. This phenomenon is known as ‘refraction.’

When we receive planetary energy—such as the Moon’s—it manifests in various aspects of our lives, like our emotions, experiences with our mother, relationships with women, and even our connection to food. Whether these experiences are ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ depends on the aspects formed by the Moon’s energy. Thus, our lives are an interplay of cosmic energy—an ongoing act of multiple refractions. When we see a prism or crystal refracting light into a rainbow, we find it mesmerizing because it resonates with us on a deeper level. It satisfies our minds by revealing the hidden mechanism of transcendence in action.
This hypothesis also aligns with the way Eastern astrologers in Vedic astrology offer advice on ‘remedies.’ For example, in Vedic Astrology texts such as Lal Kitab1 suggests if you struggle with emotional dysregulation, work on your relationship with your mother or donate food to charity or use silver plates. If you have issues with authority figures, improve your relationship with your father (assuming he is the dominant figure in your family) or spend time in the sun. These remedies aim to balance planetary energies by addressing the different ways they refract through our lives.
Moreover, our pineal gland contains small crystals less than 20 microns in length2. Dr. Joe Dispenza has explained how the pineal gland connects us to a higher source of energy through meditation3. All of these ideas interconnect, reinforcing the notion that crystals—and refraction—are deeply embedded in both our physical and metaphysical existence.
Explaining spiritual concepts in words can be challenging, as language is inherently limited. But if these interrelationships resonate with you, let me know in the comments!
